How Gluten Detection Dog Training Works

Training a gluten detection service dog takes patience, consistency, and a proven step-by-step approach. These dogs are sometimes called celiac service dogs or even gluten sniffing dogs, but no matter the name, their job is the same: helping people avoid gluten exposure with reliable scent detection. Unlike programs that place already trained dogs, I specialize in coaching owners to train their own dogs through personalized support and guidance from start to finish. Whether you're in the U.S., Canada, or anywhere else in the world, my remote program is designed to give you and your dog the individual attention you need.

Step 1: Initial Consultation

We'll start with an online consultation to set realistic expectations and talk about what a finished gluten detection dog can do. This is also your chance to ask questions and see if training with me feels like the right fit. If you're interested, email me or fill out my contact form to get started.

Step 2: Finding the Right Dog

Not every dog is a good fit for gluten detection service dog training. It's about starting with the right partner.

Already have a dog?
My temperament assessment looks for red flags and makes sure your dog has the right combination of olfactory awareness, persistence, and biddability, the willingness to work in partnership with their handler. A strong candidate enjoys sniffing, can be interrupted when needed, and has the focus to follow through on the task.
Looking for a dog?
Finding the right service dog prospect starts with the right breeder. I'll guide you toward breeders who focus on genetics, health testing, and early-life protocols like Puppy Culture, ENS, and ESI, setting puppies up for confidence and success. Starting strong gives you the best chance for a reliable gluten sniffing partner.

Whether we're assessing your current dog or helping you find one, the goal is the same: a confident, motivated dog ready to work by your side.

Step 3: Customized Gluten Detection Training Program

Training starts with you learning the basics of working with your dog and building strong scent foundations. Your dog will learn two alerts: one for gluten and one for gluten-free. From there, your dog will learn to check items in different places, container types, and forms of gluten—like solids, liquids, and dry ingredients. This way, your dog isn't just training, but is prepared to reliably help you avoid gluten exposure in everyday life.

Step 4: Graduation and Gluten Detection Certification

Graduation means your dog is reliably performing gluten detection and you feel confident interpreting their body language. While there's no official certification required for service dogs, I provide a certificate of completion to mark your team's hard work and success in the program. More importantly, you'll leave with a dog that can safely and effectively help you avoid gluten exposure in real life.

Step 5: Ongoing Support and Continuing Training

After graduation, you'll have the skills to confidently read your dog's body language and handle new situations. I provide a maintenance training plan so you know how to keep your gluten detection dog's skills sharp over time. Support is always available if you need it whether it's a quick question or guidance on a tricky scenario. And I love hearing about your team's celebrations and milestones along the way!
